  • 21-23 April 2017 - Feast on the Seasons Autumn Retreat with Daniel Jardim

The food we eat is an integral part of how we experience health and vitality. This weekend retreat explores how we can improve our well-being by simply living in closer harmony with the seasons – through the ingredients we select, the supplements we choose, and the spirit in which we conduct our lives at different times of the year. Autumn invites us to prepare the body for the chilly months ahead, and the retreat explores how to use the best seasonal and local produce to exquisite seasonal meals. In addition to demonstrating cooking techniques, Daniel shares a wealth of information from his extensive background in nutrition to help each individual make informed, and sensible choices about the food they eat. The retreat includes: • Two nights’ accommodation at Temenos (plus Sunday night free should you wish to stay on) • Two inspiring cooking demonstrations with Daniel • All meals (breakfast, lunch and supper over the weekend) • Daily seasonal Chi Kung (Qigong) sessions with Daniel • Daily guided meditation sessions with Daniel • Informative discussion on current nutrition trends, and mindful eating • Access to Temenos and its facilities When: 21-23 April 2017 Where: Temenos Retreat, McGregor Pricing: from R3290 sharing (includes all activities, all meals, and accommodation) Contact Madie 023 625 1871 temenos@lando.co.za “Daniel embodies both great wisdom and enormous love in his offerings. • 4 - 6 April 2017 - The Heroine’s Journey:  Retreat into the heart of the labyrinth with Zarine Roodt

The Heroine’s Journey … If you are weary of the sameness of your life, and you have grown tired of your old patterns of thinking and behaviour. If you seek a new challenge or path in life, but you have no idea where to begin or how to go about it, then this retreat might well provide the impetus you need to get you going. What can you expect during the retreat? I will describe how The Heroine’s Journey is an archetypal pattern that plays out in the lives of women to this day. Together we will determine where you stand in terms of your own journey and we will explore ways in which you can connect to your inner wisdom where the answers lie to set you on your own path to individuation. There will be substantial content as well as some structure to our programme, but mostly I would prefer for us to shift from chronos to kairos time and honour the feminine way, also allowing ample opportunity for you to retreat into yourself or to one of the many spiritual spaces at Temenos. All of this will take place in a gentle and non-invasive manner, allowing plenty of time for self- and group reflection in the tranquil haven that is Temenos. You will come to understand the value of your own dreams, and how to work with them. You will become acquainted with the labyrinth at Temenos and experience the benefit of labyrinth walking as a form of moving meditation. You will be given the opportunity to explore journalling and other forms of writing therapy as ways of providing sustenance and support to yourself. And, throughout, we will seek out the varied sacred spaces at Temenos, some of which – like the labyrinth – are powerful symbols of the feminine. The retreat will be facilitated by Zarine Roodt – writer, counsellor and retreat leader. Visit www.zarineroodt.com : ‘About Me’. Cost: R3 450 – which includes single accommodation, the retreat programme, and breakfast & dinner daily. Options for shared accommodation and non-residential participation are available on enquiry. Also, retreatants may stay over on Thursday 6 April at a 50% discount. To make a reservation please contact Temenos at +27 23 625 1871 or temenos@lando.co.za. For more information you are most welcome to contact me directly, either on zroodt@mweb.co.za or by calling me on 083 251 5847. (I have found that prospective participants get a better ‘feel’ of what to expect when we discuss the retreat telephonically or via Skype.) The retreat will commence at 17h30 on Tuesday 4 April (you can check in from 14h00) and end just before lunch on Thursday 6 April. Check out is at 11h00 on the 7th if you choose to stay over for an extra night at the discounted rate. No prior knowledge of Jungian psychology or other aspects contained in this retreat is required. Kindly note that this retreat requires a minimum number of 6 participants. I am inspired by the prospect of meeting new travellers on our collective Heroine’s Journey! I stand in awe of how passionately and authentically you've been committed to your journey – Dominique Forbes-Rose I am most appreciative of the programme that exposed me to meaningful new experiences … but, more important, for allowing ample personal time for quiet reflection (so much needed in our over-scheduled lives). Well done! – Dr Annette Weyers (Retreat @ The Edge Mountain Retreat, Hogsback – November 2015)

  • Tebaldi's review on Country Life by Greg Landman

Beryl is an opera aficionado of note, never letting you forget that she has been to performances “at all the world’s top houses. dear, from Vienna to San Francisco.” One of her greatest moments was seeing Carmen at La Scala, and the following evening attending a Renata Tebaldi recital in the same place. There was no containing her when she saw that the restaurant at Temenos, where we stayed over, was named for the late diva, and that there are many pieces of memorabilia there to remind one of the great lady. Temenos is a spiritual retreat with cottages scattered throughout the peaceful gardens, where you can withdraw and contemplate until you feel the shackles of the world fall away. The restaurant is at its best in summer when you can eat al fresco, either on the front stoep while the hoi polloi of McGregor goes by at its tranquil pace, or out back overlooking the flower-filled garden – both have their own charm. The cooking has no pretensions to fine dining but delivers down-to-earth country-style flavours. We opted for Pasta Carbonara, deliciously creamy with bacon, egg and plenty of Parmesan, and Pasta Caviale, very similar but with smoked salmon – both R95. The Cape Malay curry of the day, which was lamb, was redolent with real Cape flavours and aromas, not too spicy, served with basmati rice, of course, and sambals (R110). Beryl saw nothing unusual about having a bottle of wine with the curry and insisted she was being “true to the spirit of it all, dear.” She is nothing if not flexible. I had the pan-fried chicken breast with pesto and grilled lemon with a salad (R120), totally delicious in its simplicity. Their home-made lemon ice cream is a knockout and we upped the oink factor by having excellent ginger-infused cheesecake before repairing to our cottages for an obligatory siesta. What a delight. • 31 March - 3 April 2017 - Zen Pen: A Writing, Being & Meditation Retreat with Dorian Haarhoff

Writing is about a conversation with yourself and with others. An exchange of energies. It is a skill drawn from attention, presence and openness – an organic process rather than a talent. Discover the writer inside you. In this wordshop we explore our innate creativity and imagination and find the words to tell our stories… to make them more alive. We discover the connection between writing and meditation. We write and meditate on the many changes and transformations we experience as we journey down the river of our lives. We consider how creativity and imagination steady the boat and how writing helps us dip the oars into dark water so we may navigate the river safely. The wordshop also focuses on how to pay attention, be present in your writing and engage the reader as a creative partner. And source your bliss. Beginners are welcome. Time to walk, circle the garden, sit amidst blue glass and be…. Dorian is the purest storyteller I have encountered. Archetypes cling to his coat tails and hide in his book-bag hoping for a mention in his next work. Every creative writer should work with Dorian. Like Pilates for creative spirits, he re-awakens the story loving child within. (Tess Fairweather) Looking at your image in a clear stream, you answer the question by your very presence For a number of years I have facilitated this wordshop at the Buddhist Retreat Centre Ixopo. Now I’m bringing it to Temenos (a sacred enclosure) for the third time. Part of the 2016 group Dates: Fri 31 March 17.00 – Mon 3 April 11.00 The cost of R3645 pp includes: Temenos accommodation – two nights 2 brunches and 3 suppers in Tibaldi’s (ex Mon breakfast) Teas (drinks own account) the retreat a gift related to writing a story evening (Oom Schalk. We enter the world of story to recover our creativity, zest, energy and passion. We allow the imagination to lead us. We consider how attention to life stories and fiction, so rich in image, symbol and rhythm, can rekindle joy, help us heal and create a more abundant life. Everybody has a story. Come and listen to OOm Schalk, the veld philosopher, Nasrudin the trickster, to Rumi the mystic, to the quirky Rabbi. Come and raise your story IQ. All you need do is change the name and it's about YOU, this story' (Horace) Dorian Haarhoff is a story-teller, poet, speaker and a writing mentor. A former Prof of English Literature (Univ of Namibia) he has also taught in a Canadian faculty. Dorian now facilitates writing and story-telling wordshops. He has frequently led writing retreats at Temenos and other centres such as the Buddhist Retreat Centre near Ixopo. Several of his poems appear in the Cake the Buddha Ate*. Dorian is passionate about developing innate creativity and imagination. He believes in the power of stories and images to create new realities. To bring healing. To build our belonging. His workshops are based on his texts, The Writer’s Voice. A Workbook for Writer’s in Africa. and The Halo and the Noose: the Power of Story-telling and Story-listening in Business Life (co-authored) A Long Loaf* I bite into a slice of Ixopo toast spread with butter and marmalade. each mouthful stretches a long way. do the ancestors lick their lips at the mark of my teeth in the bite? and the rhythm of my circling mouth? there are as many of them watching as there are crumbs in the loaves rising from today’s baking. each bite is for the hunger of my mother and fourteen siblings, my grandmother and her hunger and thirst for righteousness. for all the forefathers who hungered for enough, such as my grandfather who looked through a bottle at the kaleidoscope of his life. I chew for my father’s line - his brother killed in war, his sister dying in infancy. this butter is not scraped thin but lies thick as curd. the rind and peel bitter-sweet, layered rich as an autumn stream, spills over the edge of the bread. come ancestors, dip your fingers in this syrup, lick them clean. share the gold crust, this family manna. may you taste fragrance in lemon and orange blossom. I bite this bread for all of us. Dorian

  • 7 - 9 April 2017 - Learning to tango - an exercise in empathy and mindfulness

This unique workshop designed by tango teacher Rachael Glaser focuses on the importance of a mindful connection with both your dance partner and the earth that supports and energises the dance. While learning the steps and techniques of the Argentine tango, students are also taught empathy - how ‘the other’ experiences the dance - by initially taking turns to be the leader and follower. This workshop is co facilitated with Lizelle Steyn and suitable for absolute beginners. No previous dance experience is needed. Rachael’s passion is to share the complex and subtle beauty of the Argentine tango - the way that it awakens us to a sensual, nonverbal communication, a mindful connection with our dance partner; and its unique ability to braid together our mind, body and spirit while developing each of these. All lessons are offered in a group format and Rachael welcomes singles, as well as couples and friends wanting to do the workshop together. No fixed dance partner needed. About the teacher: Rachael Glaser has been dancing tango since 2001 and lived in the home of tango, Buenos Aires, over two years where she studied the dance intensively with some of the world's best teachers and spent her nights dancing with the locals. She teaches the tango as a form of meditation, creative fun and a connection between people. Booking details for the weekend: Cost: R3,500 per person for single occupancy at Temenos R2,900 per person sharing a cottage (max 2 people per cottage) This includes: 3 nights' accommodation (Friday, Saturday and Sunday night) 4 Meals: Dinner on Friday night, brunch and dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday (please bring your own breakfast and a mid afternoon snack along - all cottages have kitchenettes) Seven tango lessons over the course of the weekend Please contact Madie - 023 625 1871 or temenos@lando.co.za to book. • 17-19 March 2017: Dr Arien's Mind-Body Retreat

Mind to brain, heart and body with emphasis on self-love, neuroplasticity and epigenetics For more about Dr Arien van der Merwe’s work, and testimonials after her many talks, workshops and courses, please visit: www.DrArien.co.za Date: 17-19 March 2017 Venue: Temenos, MacGregor, Cape More details: To be confirmed early January 2017. There will also be an early bird discount. Watch this space... Price: R4 500 per person, including 2 night’s accommodation, 2x breakfasts, 2x dinners, facilitation fee and creative material. There’s very limited space, so please book and confirm as soon as possible. Full payment serves as confirmation of booking. (Sunday, 19 March accommodation free for those who’d like to stay over another night to reflect, relax and rejuvenate after the Retreat) More information: his is a weekend retreat where science and nature will strive to be in balance! Some time will be spent on fascinating, basic introductory scientific information to keep the left brain happy, but emphasis will mostly be on exploring practical right brain and whole brain ways and fun activities to enhance and encourage the neuroplasticity (malleability) of your brain. From there, it's a short skip and a jump to positively influencing the health of all your cells and especially your heart, to encourage self-love from your own heart to your own body, then extending via the heart's electromagnetic energy field to the world around you. We can influence the messages we send to our cells, through our informational substances (a.k.a. molecules of emotions as described by Candace Pert), that is the epigenetic binding on our cell membranes that affects every single function inside each of the 50 trillion cells within our bodies. We'll explore many ways of enhancing our inner physical, emotional and spiritual world for a happier, healthier, wholesome you – through epigenetic restructuring. Heart, Brain and Body Before the heart pumps oxygen and nutrient rich blood to every single cell of the body, it pumps it to itself first. This is an example of self-love and not a selfish act at all. The heart is also more than a pump with an energy field extending into the field of infinite possibility. More and more research studies show the link between the heart, the emotions, stress and the fact that the heart also functions as brain. We’ll be exploring this in depth during the Retreat, learning how to activate the mind-brain-heart connection in practical ways through meta- and epigenetics to enhance the natural malleability (called neuroplasticity) of the brain and body, sending different messages right into the DNA of our cells, to enhance love and healing for ourselves and our world. Some of the feedback from the Neuroplasticity Workshop held in Pretoria, 5/11/16 Retrain your brain – enhance your right mind for whole brain functioning! Fun filled day with some info, lots of fun, creative activities for everyone, dancing in the spirit of fun fitness. A selection of feedback from participants: I really enjoyed the workshop, would love more information on the subconscious and superconscious mind Very interesting, keep new information coming! Should really be longer – felt we could have got into more detail, looking forward to the longer retreat. Thank you very much for today!
