  • Autumn Newsletter

The beauty of Autumn has come to the gardens of Temenos and along with its golden approach, a deepening stillness. Every year, at this time of year, many of us sense an inner invitation to more solitude and silence. Indeed, there was a time in my own life when Autumn would entice me to retreat to secluded places in nature or to the hushed tranquility of monasteries. These were times too when alongside meditation, the desire for and practice of prayer could deepen. In our secular age the concept of prayer is often dismissed as stuffy or naïve while the popularity of mindfulness, with all its undoubted benefits, has soared. There is little doubt, given the turbulent world we live in, that there is a collective longing for times to quieten down and drown out the ceaseless chatter and sirens of modern life. Last week, while walking through our gardens, I was reminded of what an old monk once pointed out to me while walking through a forest. “Do you see the orange and gold fire”, he said pointing up to the autumn trees? Encouraging me to pay attention a little longer than usual, so as to take in the depth of miracle unfolding in front of my eyes, he suggested I find words to express my sense of wonder and gratitude. To my unceasing amazement, this practice of taking time to express gratitude, leads to another miracle. A moment in which another voice, an internal whisper, may respond. Prayer has been a constant through all human civilizations. One of the reasons is that it provides a doorway to thanks, a way of relating to the world without our egos. Each day we encounter small amounts of grace and miracle that all too often go unnoticed. Irrespective of whether one stands on a mountaintop or in a forest or temple or cathedral, there can be much to gain from touching the stillness, paying attention and then opening our hearts into a mystery bigger than ourselves. This Autumn we are offering guests several ways to retreat whether it be deepening a mindfulness practice or opening in silence to the mystery of prayer. There are also retreats to nourish body, mind and soul as well as opportunities to replenish one’s creative spirit. For those who need to embrace stillness without any formality we are introducing Loving the Silence weeks when our gardens will be reserved for guests only. May Autumn be for you a time of deeper stillness and golden gratitude. Billy, the gardener Winter Weekday Special From May to August we have annually offered our popular Winter specials. • 10 – 13 June 2024 | TEMENOS SILENT RETREAT with Billy Kennedy

For over Twenty years Temenos has welcomed guests seeking a place apart, a retreat away from the hurly burly of everyday life -  to rest, to restore oneself, and to renew a sense of wellbeing. The beautiful and tranquil gardens were especially created to support this nurturing of both mind and body by offering peaceful spaces designed for contemplation and quiet reflection, as well as a venue for a wide variety of wellness and mindfulness workshops and retreats. For those guests who wish to embrace an even deeper level of soul work, a certain measure of solitude and stillness is essential. In this regards silence and Silent Retreats can prove very helpful especially if one wishes to listen to the deeper promptings of soul. In the great tradition of silent retreats, the art of conscious contemplation encourages one’ to await one’s own discovery’. Thomas Merton, the renowned contemplative monk once described this embracing of a contemplative experience as ‘giving something of one’s silly self away.’ In order to reflect inwardly in a calm and constructive way, it is important not only to quieten both outer and inner noise, but also to remove distraction and verbal communication. This process is not for everyone but for those who encounter and experience it, a Silent Retreat can be both life changing and life enhancing. Join us for a week of restful silence, meditation, prayer and Yoga. • 26-28 July 2024 | Wisdom from the Unconscious | A Journey with Meditation, Music & Mandalas

Wisdom from the Unconscious A Journey with Meditation, Music & Mandalas with Johann van Greunen, Specialist Wellness Counsellor, Reiki Master & MARI® Practitioner and Anelle Naudé-Lester Psychologist and Bonny Method Guided Imagery and Music Practitioner “We meet ourselves time and again in a thousand disguises on the path of life.” Carl Gustav Jung On this silent retreat we will use the powerful methods of Guided Imagery in Music (GIM) and the Mandala Assessment Research Instrument (MARI®) to facilitate connection and integration. This process of working with GIM and MARI® engages inner wisdom, intuition and insight that transcends language in a very powerful way. This retreat will be structured as follows: Early morning movement practices Morning and early evening meditations Adapted group GIM sessions Adapted group MARI® sessions Various adapted GIM sessions Evening Sound Journeys. About Guided Imagery in Music (GIM): Anelle writes: “The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) is a music-centred, consciousness-expanding therapy developed by Helen Bonny. Ever since I was first introduced to this method, I have been passionate about the power of music and as a co-therapist, not only for my clients, but for my own therapeutic growth as well. Classical music sequences stimulate journeys of the imagination, facilitate clients’ integration of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of well-being. Imagery can be seen as a mirror of the inner reality, surfacing through metaphors and symbolic material. Through this creative process access to the unconscious is provided and leads to an opportunity for emotional release, experience, intuitive and archetypal journeys as well as transpersonal experiences. I find this way of working especially helpful when we feel the constraints of language, not being able to adequately express what we feel. In many ways this method has transformed my practice and my clients’ therapeutic progress, sparking creativity, vision, and insight. Various adaptations - referred to as Adapted Imagery and Music (GIM) - with regards to group work and applying this tool in different contexts have been developed and are used with great success. The Association of Music and Imagery (AMI) as well as The Journal of the Association for Music and Imagery are excellent resources to explore if more information is needed.” About the Mandala Assessment Research Instrument (MARI®): Finding itself in the domain of Art Therapy, MARI® was developed by American art therapist Joan Kellogg in the 1970’s. It is based on the work of Carl Jung, who pointed out that consciousness is comprised of four aspects: thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuiting. The MARI® process accesses all of these aspects. Also referred to as The Great Round, MARI® resembles the Cycle of Life’s Journey, from birth (entry) to death (disintegration) and transformation, which starts the whole cycle all over again. The MARI® board reflects 13 life stages which each has unique qualities, challenges, and requirements for growth. It also reflects four quadrants: Forming, Becoming, Manifesting and Dissolving / Re-birthing. The process of the MARI® reading is intuitive, which involves the client choosing symbols that they are attracted to, which are printed on see-through plastic cards, and these symbol cards are then matched with colour cards. The card choices are then placed on the appropriate stages on the MARI® board that the symbols represent and discussed. On this retreat we will be working with a version of MARI® adapted for group work. What participants say about this retreat: “Powerful! Please always combine these modalities. Very much needed.” “Dit was die innerlike reis waarna ek op soek was. Die omgewing, die GIM en MARI asook die stilte het baie effektief die proses gefasiliteer. Dit het ‘n blywende indruk op my gelaat wat my daaglikse lewenstyl drasties verander. My hoop is om meer bewustelik te lewe.” “It was a sacred and safe space to explore what needed to be revealed and integrated. Very, very special and life-giving.” “Amazing work and energy. Both of you are incredibly gifted, equipped and experienced therapists/facilitators who managed the energy with mindful wisdom and empathy.” “It has been a time of deep nourishment and reflection. A time to reconnect with myself and my unconscious wisdom.” “Anelle and Johann your patience with and trust of the process is inspiring. Your gentle energy guided me along a very, very difficult inward journey, and got me safely to a renewed state of being. Thank you, deeply and sincerely.” “Thank you for sharing your passions, which is so evident in your care and support and wisdom.” You are invited to join us for this weekend retreat at Temenos Retreat Centre from 26th – 28th July 2024. • 11-13 Oct 2024 | Season of Awakening Soul Journey into Spring A Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga

Soul Journey into Spring A Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Retreat with Johann van Greunen, Specialist Wellness Counsellor and Reiki Master and Glenda van den Oever, Yoga Teacher “…when it is springtime in your soul, then the rhythm, the energy and the hidden light of your own clay works with you. You are in the flow of your own growth of and potential.” - John O’Donohue Spring is the Season of Awakening to new possibilities and new life. For the soul a journey into spring can entail undertaking new projects, giving attention to desires and hopes that stir up after the slumber and sleep associated with winter, or even making some important life changes. A silent space to focus on awakening of the senses and spirit is especially needed as our bodies and souls are often depleted through all the challenges and the relentless demands that our current lives and work environments hold. This silent retreat will create the sacred space for solitude and deep reflection to facilitate this soul journey into spring through the practices of mindfulness, meditation, yoga and movement. On this retreat we will focus on the following: Silence and Solitude: The retreat will be silent from after dinner on the Friday till the Sunday brunch. We will intentionally create a structured and supported environment to support silence and deep reflection. Entering deeply into silence and solitude through the mindfulness practices of meditation, yoga, movement and mindful eating. Connecting with nature through a focus on the elements and garden walks. Meditation: During the retreat we will engage with the following meditation practices: Seated early morning and early evening Mindfulness Breath Meditations. Walking the Labyrinth (walking meditation). Chakra Cleansing Meditation. Lying-down Sound Journey. Seated Chanting (Mantra) Meditation. This will be done at the hand of a recorded chant and it will be optional for participants to stay silent during this meditation. Mantras always come from the ancient Sanskrit language, which is sound sensitive. Chanting a mantra calms the nervous system and tones the vagus nerve. Every mantra (chant) activates a particular kind of energy in a different part of the body. Benefits are increased self-awareness, reduced stress, a greater sense of calm and sets you up for a better night’s sleep. No experience is needed to participate in a chanting meditation. Yoga: Morning and late afternoon yoga classes will be restorative, cleansing and deeply relaxing. The practice will be suitable for all levels of practitioners. Awakening: Awakening the senses through a focus on the elements to facilitate grounding and connectedness to nature and all in existence. Awakening the senses through movement and mindful eating. Creative expression through drawing, painting, collaging, creative writing and journaling. Awakening creative energy through a practical session with colour and music. This session will be followed by the creation of a Nature/Fresh Mandala as a group. This will be done with both supplied materials and materials collected by participants. Creating a mandala is a meditative/reflection tool to assist quieting the mind and “turning inward”. Building a mandala is a process of journeying into joy and happiness. This process allows the opportunity to be taken on a journey into presence, aligning mind, body and spirit, and to let go of what no longer serves us and allow new growth in. What participants say about this retreat: “Silence gave me the opportunity to get away from “niceties” and really connect on a deeper level. I have discovered beautiful truths and learned and integrated these through the yoga sessions and meditation.” “The yoga sessions were amazing! Glenda is the most gifted facilitator.” “Stappie vir stappie, stukkie vir stukkie weer by my siel uitgekom.” “... creating safe space to land and be – thank you for your fantastic presence Glenda and Johann.” “Die meditasie sagkens en professioneel hanteer, wat dit vir ‘n beginner toeganklik en maklik maak. Die joga ‘gentle’ maar ook ferm. Ek neem huis toe meer as wat verwag is, gemoedsrus en nuwe ‘tools’ om te gaan gebruik in ‘n deurmekaar wêreld.” “Gentle, grounding – an opportunity to re-assess and re-align my personal values, situation and goals.” “Enjoyed the balance and variety of activities.” “Absolutely loved the experience – thank you!” “I got what I came for, and more.” “My experience on the retreat has been filled with new energy, new experiences, contemplation, self-reflection, new ways of thought, expression and being. Solitude is not new, but ‘forced’ to stop the pace of life was so useful.” You are invited to join us at Temenos Retreat Centre on 11 October 2024 for this retreat. Checking in-time will be from 14:00 on Friday 11th October and we will gather 16:00 for the start of the retreat. The retreat will end at 14:00 on Sunday 13th October. The fee includes brunch and dinner daily, coffee/tea with snacks the Saturday afternoon, all retreat activities and materials used as well as free accommodation for Sunday evening for those that can stay over. Supper on Sunday evening will be at your own cost. The restaurant, Tebaldi’s at Temenos is closed on Sunday evenings, but you can choose to self-cater or book for dinner in town or order a take-away from Tebaldi’s. The cottages at Temenos are fully equipped for self-catering. The retreat fee is R 4 400.00 for shared accommodation and R 4 900.00 for single accommodation. Glenda van den Oever: Certified Hatha Yoga Teacher Yoga has been part of my life for over 25 years and my passion for the practice has helped me grow stronger both on and off the mat. I love sharing how yoga inspires me to live each moment mindfully. I will always be a student of the practice and I am deeply grateful for the loving wisdom each teacher has shared with me. Certification Blissful Kids Yoga My love and passion for young souls is what has inspired my pursuit in teaching yoga to children of all needs, having an authentic and neutral teaching style that is compassion centred and mindful. In my classes I love to combine creative heartfelt educational sequencing and a spirit of playfulness with an art element. I dedicate one art-based class a term, however should the need arise I would include an extra art element to the class. This will further express and inspire the young mind. I tailor the classes to a theme that is running alongside the school classes. I welcome and encourage teacher interaction and collaboration. This helps me to cater to needs of the student/s and keep continuation. It is wonderful to see kids shine in class and see how they blossom from yoga focussed classes. I seek to help others thrive in life by nurturing body, mind and spirit with yoga. I trust that at the end of a class, you step off the mat feeling balanced, nourished and refreshed. Namaste Glenda

  • 25 - 27 Oct 2024 | From Courageous & Joyful Presence to Wise Action. Retreat with Sue Cooper

This silent weekend retreat will explore ways in which we can discover the courage within ourselves to live wholeheartedly and authentically. Through the emotional containment of silence and meditation, we will ground ourselves more fully and open-heartedly in the present moment, discovering the joy that comes through connecting to ourselves and to life with compassionate simplicity and discerning wisdom. Through meditation practices which cultivate calm and tranquility, we will establish an inner refuge, a safe home within, which rests on a foundation of kindness and compassion towards ourselves. This creates the conditions to heal the fragmentation that comes from living with fear, perfectionism and shame. This process will be supported externally by the beauty of nature in the gardens of Temenos, and internally by embodied awareness practices which integrate body, heart and mind. This retreat includes teachings from the wisdom of Buddhist psychology, guided meditations in all postures and time for silent walking meditations through the beautiful gardens of Temenos. The ancient practice of qigong movement meditation, as well as optional embodied movement classes and relaxing 60 min aromatherapy massages, will enhance our embodied experience. There will also be time for restorative rest and short, individual sessions with Sue during the retreat. Delicious vegetarian/vegan food will be savoured in silence as part of our integrated practice. This retreat ends with lunch on Sunday 27 October and includes free accommodation on that Sunday night.
