“There is a pervasive form of contemporary violence to which the idealist most easily succumbs: activism and overwork. The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to violence. The frenzy of our activism neutralizes our work for peace. It destroys our own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of our own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.” ~ Thomas Merton
With all the radical change and enormous amount of suffering in this world we often find ourselves in a place of “busy-ness”and overwork - this is a coping mechanism - a way of numbing - a way of avoiding what we are really feeling. Compassion has a direct and integral relationship with suffering. If there is no connection with our suffering, then there’s not much compassion.
This is an invitation to STOP - to begin to pay attention to that which you are feeling and befriend these feelings. Self-Compassion - fierce, fearless compassion - with courage, curiosity and trust in basic goodness helps us to see options we might not have otherwise imagined or ever thought possible.
Research has shown that practicing mindful self-compassion decreases stress, anxiety, depression and is essential to cultivating resilience and a more fulfilling life.
Join us for #TheSelfCompassionBreak at Temenos Retreat in McGregor. The invitation is to re-connect to yourself, to community and to the world through Creative Guiding, gentle movement, conversation, reflection and mindful self-compassion exercises. You will leave feeling calm and centred - with practical tools which will enable you to generate more capacity to engage in this ever-changing world.
More about Creative Guiding: In a nurturing environment Karen gently nudges and steers the art making. She draws on inspiration from nature and its elements, stories, poetry and other stimuli. The emphasis is on the experience of creating, developing and reflecting through the artwork and not on the finished product. An invitation to let go of expectations and be curious about whatever emerges.
Feedback from previous participants:
“The art-making processes were extremely helpful in my personal journey. The way in which the activities themselves were thought out created a flow and development process. The interaction between the group was inspiring and completely pure and beautiful.” ~ ERL
“The retreat definitely enriched my life. Karen has created this safe space where one can be open and honest and vulnerable. Also, being amongst strangers makes it much easier to open up without fear of judgment. We arrived as strangers and left as sisters” ~ LP
"A huge gift - time to nourish, be still, explore, have fun, observe the body and emotions without judgment." ~ AA
“Reminded me of what is important in our daily lives. Reminder of the joys and gifts we have. Reminder of all the beauties we possess.”~ SR
